I feel like when most couples first enter the lifestyle, they’re on this almost… obsessive hunt. The perfect couple. The most attractive. The ones that check every box physically.

From the outside looking in, it’s easy to blur the lines. People hear “open,” “lifestyle,” “ENM”… and assume it’s all the same.That there are no rules. No boundaries. No real difference between freedom and betrayal. But there is a line.

There’s a saying in the lifestyle that gets repeated often: “You play to the lowest comfort level.” And while I understand the intention behind it—creating safety, respecting boundaries, moving at a pace that honors both partners—my journey didn’t exactly look like that.

For most of my life, I thought love meant doing. Fixing. Helping. Protecting. Making things better. If someone I loved was struggling, I wanted to solve it. Ease it. Take it away. Because that’s what love is… right?

There’s a version of me that existed long before the lifestyle. She was the “good” one. The rule follower. The one who did what she was supposed to do—especially when it came to relationships, love, and sex.

Jealousy gets a bad reputation. It’s labeled as toxic. Immature. Something to avoid, suppress, or be ashamed of. We’re taught that if we were more evolved, more secure, more “healed”… we wouldn’t feel it at all.

There’s a common misconception when people hear about the lifestyle—whether it’s swinging, ENM, or any form of consensual non-monogamy. The assumption is almost always the same: it’s all about sex. But the truth? Sex is actually the smallest part of it.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—the Lifestyle has a way of bringing things out of you that you never even knew existed. And recently… I uncovered something big.

Living your life in the Lifestyle demands something most people aren’t used to giving—accountability. And intention.

It seems like almost every couple who enters the Lifestyle has at least thought about the ever sought-after unicorn. It’s what initially drew us in, too.

When we first entered the Lifestyle, there was one dynamic I simply couldn’t wrap my head around—solo dating. It wasn’t something I judged, but it was something I didn’t understand. It felt unfamiliar… unsettling, even. The idea of it just didn’t land for me in any way that felt safe or aligned.

It’s been a while since I’ve sat down to write, and wow—what a full, transformative last eight months it’s been. Life has been… lifey. Growth, challenges, lessons, expansion—all of it. But setting that aside for a moment, it felt like the right time for a true Lifestyle check-in.
